have you ever heard of a bat that drinks the blood of other animals? well if you have, you have heard about the vampire bat! this tiny bat only weighs 2 ounces. its body is 3 - 5 inches long (about the length of a tea cup) and it has a wingspan of 7 inches. the vampire bat is found in north and south america, but it is most populated in parts of mexico, central america and south america. vampire bats have a unique way of finding their next meal. they use tiny nerve fibers on their nose to find warm spots of blood on the mammals that they approach. once they find this warm spot, they sink their teeth into the cow, pig, or other mammals skin. the blood flows freely and the vampire bat starts to eat. it will stay attached, or hooked, to the mammal for up to 30 minutes. the bats saliva also contains a special enzyme that stops the victims blood from clotting. this helps the vampire bat get nice and full before it leaves. baby vampire bats are not like their adult parents and do not drink blood. they drink nothing but their mothers milk and stay with their mother for three months. although vampire bat attacks on humans are rare, make sure you are on the lookout the next time you see a bat flying around above you. it just might be a vampire bat!
