insight

Explanation:

Insight refers to a sudden understanding or realization of a problem - solution. Miguel's experience of the answer "just seem[ing] to pop into my head" while not actively working on the problem at that moment is characteristic of insight. A heuristic is a rule - of - thumb strategy, an algorithm is a step - by - step procedure, and a mechanical solution involves following set procedures without the sudden 'aha' moment.

Answer:

D. insight
