what about metals that can have different charges? these are called transition metals, and they need a little extra help. we use roman numerals in parentheses to show their charge. for example, iron (fe) can be fe²⁺ or fe³⁺.
- if you have fecl₂, the chlorine ions each have a -1 charge. since there are two of them, the total negative charge is -2. to balance this, the iron must have a +2 charge. so, its iron(ii) chloride.
- if you have fecl₃, the total negative charge from three chloride ions is -3. this means the iron must have a +3 charge. so, its iron(iii) chloride.
