they had to stay at ellis island for weeks before being allowed to enter the united states.
they were given eighteen dollars with which to start their lives.
they were allowed into the united states immediately.

Explanation:

To determine the correct answer, we analyze each option based on historical knowledge of Ellis Island immigration:

• The first option: Immigrants at Ellis Island underwent medical and legal inspections to assess physical and mental fitness for entry, which aligns with historical records.
• The second option: Most immigrants were processed in a few hours to a few days, not weeks, so this is incorrect.
• The third option: There was no standard $18$ - dollar provision for immigrants to start their lives, so this is false.
• The fourth option: Immigrants were not allowed in immediately; they had to go through inspections, so this is incorrect.
