Question

freedmen’s bureau
which group would the creator of this illustration most likely have supported?
○ confederate soldiers
○ former slaveowners
○ southern democrats
○ radical republicans

Explanation:

The Freedmen’s Bureau was established to assist formerly enslaved people (freedmen) and was supported by Radical Republicans who advocated for civil rights for African Americans during Reconstruction. Confederate soldiers, former slaveowners, and southern Democrats opposed the Freedmen’s Bureau and Black civil rights, while Radical Republicans supported its mission. The illustration shows a Union officer (likely representing Freedmen’s Bureau support) intervening to protect freedmen from hostile groups, aligning with Radical Republicans’ goals.

Answer:

D. Radical Republicans
