Question

the \fight\ that formed the nhl
4 within a few years, the nha was at war with itself. eddie livingstone owned the toronto shamrocks and later purchased a second team, the toronto blueshirts. this upset the other owners, who cited rules against owning two teams. they voted to suspend the blueshirts. livingstone, in turn, sued the nha, so the other owners took a bold step: they dissolved the nha and formed a new league that did not include livingstone or his teams. that new league was—and still is—the national hockey league.
the nhl begins
5 the nhl’s first two games were played on december 19, 1917. but the question of which was actually the first game would remain unanswered for a century. one game—between the montreal canadiens and the ottawa senators—started at 8:30 p.m. but no one could find or remember the start time of the game between the montreal wanderers and the toronto arenas. finally, in 2017, a newspaper ad was found that set the start time of the wanderers/arenas game at 8:15 p.m. it confirmed montreal’s 10–9 victory over toronto as the first official nhl game. harry hyland and joe malone, who would both go on to the hockey hall of fame, each scored five goals during the games.
question 3
paragraph 5 is mainly about ______.
a a question about which nhl game was played first
b the team that lost the nhl’s first official game
c a question about which day the first nhl game took place
d the two players who made the hockey hall of fame

Explanation:

To solve this, we analyze each option:

• Option A: Paragraph 5 starts by saying the NHL's first two games were on Dec 19, 1917, but the question of which was first was unanswered for a century. It then explains how the start time of the Wanderers/Arenas game was found, confirming it as the first. This matches the main idea about the question of which NHL game was first.
• Option B: The paragraph isn't mainly about the losing team; the loss is a minor detail.
• Option C: The day (Dec 19, 1917) was known, the question was about which game was first, not the day.
• Option D: The players' Hall of Fame achievement is a minor detail, not the main topic.

Answer:

A. a question about which NHL game was played first
