this demonstration explains how to build a stem - and - leaf plot. here is a data set from a small sample. a student asked her dormmates to count how many books they had in their dormroom, and the results are shown to the right. the purpose of the stem - and - leaf plot is to quickly organize the data so as to show the distribution of the data set. the general procedure is to break every value into a stem and a leaf. the leaves are then listed next to the stem. step #1 for example, the first value in the data set is 50. for this data set, the stem would be the tens digit, and the leaf would be the ones digit. note in the stem - and - leaf display, for this number (50), the leaf, 0, is listed on the row for the stem, 5. step #2 the next value in the data set is 71. this would break into 7 (the stem) and 1 (the leaf). this leaf has been added to the display (compare the display to the right with the one above). step #3 the next value in the data set is 32. this would break into 3 (the stem) and 2 (the leaf). this leaf has been added to the display. steps #4 & #5 the next two values in the data set are 43 and 54. repsectivley, these numbers break into the stems 4 and 5 and the leaves 3 and 4. note where these leaves have been added to the display to the right. steps #6 & #7 the last two leaves have been added to the table. first, confirm that the last two numbers in the data set are indeed represnted correctly. next, notice that there are no leaves in the 6 row, but the row should still be listed in the display. there is an alternative representation that is often used. this representation is built the exact same way, but the stems are presented in a manner to
emind\ the reader where the leaves are intended to go. (compare the display to the right to the display directly above.) shown to the left is a similar data set to the one above. this student collected data from 8 individuals. please use the strategy demonstrated above to represent this other students data set in a stem - and - leaf display. for this problem, you are encouraged to build the display using pen and paper. then fill in the rows accordingly.
