Question

thesis: our determination and our genes have equal effects on who we turn out to be.

click the paragraph that veers off the thesis.

genetics versus will power

people are born with personality. its a fact that babies have different personalities. some are aggressive, while some are calm and curious. but genetics are only partially responsible for who we are. our own initiative and determination have just as much to do with who we turn out to be.

think about the difference between the sexes. its definitely true that genetically there are many differences between girls and boys. in general, boys are bigger and stronger than girls. history shows that men have been the warriors and women the nurturers, and this would fit with our genetic make-up. but to jump from this biological difference and say that all boys like monster trucks and all girls like dolls would not be accurate. the truth is some girls would rather wear pants, and they do. and some boys like yoga and follow through with that inclination.

social pressure has an effect on how we present ourselves. children are raised to appreciate certain interests directed at people of their sex. politics and sports used to be mostly male-dominated activities. now, more women are becoming politicians and playing hockey. at the same time, more men are becoming teachers and stay-at-home dads. gender stereotypes are changing fast and furiously. society is making it possible for people of both sexes to do whatever pleases them.

you may have noticed that some people just seem happier than others. studies have shown that about 50% of our emotional state is genetic. people are born with different levels of predetermined happiness. some people are just happier than others. but thats not to say that if you fall on the unhappy side of the scale, youre destined to be miserable for the rest of your life. remember, theres still that other 50% that you can work on. a person determined to be happy can be happy-its all a matter of your conscious outlook.

Analyze the thesis statement

The thesis is: "Our determination and our genes have equal effects on who we turn out to be." Any paragraph must support this balance between genetics and personal determination/willpower.

Evaluate each paragraph

  • Paragraph 1 discusses genetics versus willpower/determination directly, supporting the thesis.
  • Paragraph 2 discusses genetic differences between sexes versus individual preferences, which relates to genetics and personal choice.
  • Paragraph 3 focuses entirely on social pressure, gender stereotypes, and societal changes. It does not discuss genetics or the balance between genetics and determination.
  • Paragraph 4 discusses happiness being 50% genetic and 50% conscious outlook (determination), directly supporting the thesis.

Identify the off-thesis paragraph

Paragraph 3 veers off the thesis because it focuses on social pressure and societal changes rather than the interaction between genetics and individual determination.
