excerpt from should bottled water be banned
by penelope
there are many reasons why we should ban the use of plastic bottles. a lot of facts were surprising to me but, in the long run, make sense. for example, it surprised me how many plastic bottles were used per year compared to how many are recycled. americans alone used 50 billion bottles in 2006, but only recycled 38 billion. not only is it destroying the planet, but it’s not helping our wallets either. instead of just using tap water, which would be roughly $0.49 a year for eight glasses of water a day, we are spending $1,400 a year. there are cheaper and safer options for the environment. it makes me upset to see humans trashing the world. we’re supposed to take care of the earth, so why aren’t we?

testing on animals has helped in previous scientific research. there is also no alternative for testing on an organism. using animals is an alternative to testing on human subjects because that would be considered inhumane. however, animal testing causes the animals undergoing these tests to feel physical pain as well as emotional distress. animal testing is a form of torture and induces suffering. research also shows that there are alternative ways to test products that don’t involve the use of animals. different medications and products react differently with varying species. therefore scientists won’t know for sure how these certain products and medicines will respond to humans as

First Passage (Plastic Water Bottles)
Question 1: Author's Main Claim
The passage discusses banning plastic bottles, citing environmental harm (destroying the planet) and financial waste (not helping wallets). Option C says limiting use is cheaper and better for the planet, matching the dual focus on cost and environment. A focuses only on money, B on Earth (not cost), D on difficulty (not discussed).
The passage shows people spend $1,400 vs. $0.49 on water, implying unawareness of costs (A). B is wrong (plastic isn't running out), C is not supported (no info on cutting back), D is wrong (author argues for change, so action is possible).
The author’s claim is to ban plastic bottles for environmental and financial reasons. Evidence includes: "Americans alone used 50 billion bottles in 2006, but only recycled 38 billion" (environmental harm), and "Instead of just using tap water... we are spending $1,400 a year" (financial waste). Also, "There are cheaper and safer options for the environment" supports both cost and planet.
