Question

the best definition of theme is...
the message the author is sending.
the lesson the author is teaching.
the characters main problem.
a word that summarizes the story.

Explanation:

To determine the best definition of "theme" in literature (a subfield of Arts), we analyze each option:

• "The message the author is sending" is a common and accurate definition of theme, as theme conveys the author's underlying message or idea.
• "The lesson the author is teaching" is too narrow, as theme isn't always a "lesson" in a didactic sense.
• "The character’s main problem" refers to conflict, not theme.
• "A word that summarizes the story" is too simplistic; theme is a broader idea, not just a single - word summary.

Answer:

The message the author is sending.
