the skeletal system - part 2
outside of the body bones become brittle but bones are very much alive inside the body, being fed by a network of blood vessels from the circulatory system and nerves from the nervous system.
bones are made of the same material even though they come in different shapes and sizes. bones are organs and are made of two or more types of tissues. these tissues are compact bone and spongy bone. the compact bone is the dense and tough outer layer. the next layer is spongy bone, which is lighter and slightly flexible. in the middle of some bones is jelly - like bone marrow. the marrow is where new cells are constantly being produced for blood.
there are two parts to the skeletal system: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton.
the axial skeleton has a total of 80 bones. it consists of the vertebral column, the rib cage, and the skull. to help humans maintain their upright posture, the axial skeleton transmits the weight from the head, the trunk, and the upper extremities down to the lower extremities at the hip joints.
the appendicular skeleton has a total of 126 bones. it is formed by the pectoral girdles, the upper limbs, the pelvic girdle, and the lower limbs. the bones of the appendicular skeleton enable walking, running, and other movement. it also protects the major organs responsible for digestion, excretion, and reproduction.
The text is about the skeletal system. It explains that bones are alive inside the body, fed by blood vessels and nerves. Bones are made of compact and spongy tissue. The skeletal system has two parts: axial (80 bones, includes vertebral column, rib cage, skull; helps with upright posture) and appendicular (126 bones, includes pectoral girdles, limbs, pelvic girdle; enables movement and protects some organs).

axial skeleton: 80 bones, includes vertebral column, rib cage, skull; helps with upright posture. appendicular skeleton: 126 bones, includes pectoral girdles, limbs, pelvic girdle; enables movement and protects some organs. Bones are alive (fed by blood vessels and nerves), made of compact (dense outer layer) and spongy (lighter, flexible layer) tissue, with bone marrow (produces blood cells) in some.
