kaikōura is a small, primarily rural district of 2,000 square kilometres and a population of just over four thousand people. it has a dramatic location between the mountains and the sea. it attracts visitors from all over the world who come to view the giant sperm whales and humpbacks, as well as dolphins, sharks, seals, and fish. on 14 november 2016, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake caused major damage to kaikōura. roads and rail were closed leaving kaikōura tourism and hospitality industry cut off from its flow of travellers, right before its peak summer period. since then, the numbers of visitors have started to recover, however, the availability of accommodation and lacking infrastructure still causes a strain on the community.
kaikōura is dedicated to the sustainable development and recovery of its area and has been making a name for itself both within aotearoa new zealand and overseas. it has used its earthcheck sustainable destinations programme involvement to demonstrate commitment to the environment.
