homeostatic imbalance 7.5 meningitis, an inflammation of the meninges, is a serious threat to the brain because bacterial or viral meningitis may spread into the nervous tissue of the cns. this condition of brain inflammation is called encephalitis (en - sef - ah - ltis). meningitis is usually diagnosed by taking a sample of cerebrospinal fluid from the subarachnoid space surrounding the spinal cord
cerebrospinal fluid
cerebrospinal (sere - bro - spinal) fluid (csf) is a watery “broth” with components similar to blood plasma, from which it forms. however, it contains less (1 ) and more vitamin c, and its ion composition is different. the choroid plexuses—clusters of capillaries hanging from the “roof” in each of the brains ventricles, or enlarged chambers—continually form csf from blood. the csf in and around the brain and cord forms a watery (2 ) that protects the fragile nervous tissue from blows and other trauma, and helps the brain “float” so it is not damaged by the pressure of its own weight.
inside the brain, csf is continually moving (as indicated by the numbered pathway in figure 7 18c). it (3 ) from the two lateral ventricles (in the cerebral hemispheres) into the third ventricle (in the diencephalon) and then through the cerebral aqueduct of the midbrain into the fourth ventricle dorsal to the pons and medulla oblongata. some of the fluid reaching the fourth ventricle simply continues down into the (4 ) cord, but most of it circulates into the subarachnoid space through three openings, the paired lateral apertures and the median aperture (aper = open) in the walls of the fourth ventricle. the csf returns to the blood in the dural venous sinuses through the (5 ) granulations. in this way, csf is continually replaced

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has less protein compared to blood plasma. It forms a watery cushion to protect the nervous tissue. It circulates through the ventricles of the brain. Some fluid goes down the spinal cord and most enters the subarachnoid space. It returns to the blood via arachnoid granulations.
