Question

read the excerpt from \speaking arabic.\

at a neighborhood fair in texas, somewhere between the german oom - pah sausage stand and the mexican gorditas booth, i overheard a young man say to his friend, \i wish i had a heritage. sometimes i feel—so lonely for one.\ and the tall american trees were dangling their thick branches right down over his head.

in this excerpt, the author reveals the narrator’s view on heritage by

describing the memory of a family member.
describing a conversation with someone else.
presenting dialogue that includes a similar perspective.
presenting dialogue that includes a contrasting perspective.

Explanation:

To solve this, we analyze the excerpt: The young man's dialogue ("I wish I had a heritage...") shows a longing for heritage. The narrator's view (implied) contrasts with this? No, wait— the question is how the author reveals the narrator’s view on heritage. Let's check the options:

1. "describing the memory of a family member" — the excerpt has no family member memory. Eliminate.

1. "describing a conversation with someone else" — the narrator overheard a conversation, not had one. So this is inaccurate. Eliminate.

1. "presenting dialogue that includes a similar perspective" — If the narrator’s view is similar to the young man’s (longing for heritage), but wait, maybe not. Wait, the fourth option: "presenting dialogue that includes a contrasting perspective" — Let's re-examine. The young man says he feels lonely for a heritage, while the setting has German and Mexican heritage (sausage stand, gorditas booth) around. The narrator’s view (implied) might contrast with the young man’s (who feels he lacks heritage, while others have it). So the dialogue (the young man’s words) contrasts with the narrator’s implied view (since the narrator is in a place with visible heritages, maybe the narrator recognizes heritage around, while the young man feels he has none). So the correct option is the fourth: presenting dialogue that includes a contrasting perspective.

Answer:

D. presenting dialogue that includes a contrasting perspective
