alices adventures in wonderland (chapter 1: down the rabbit hole) by lewis carroll
alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do. once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, and what is the use of a book, thought alice without pictures or conversations?
so she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy - chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.
there was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the rabbit say to itself, oh dear! oh dear! i shall be too late! (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat - pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, alice started to her feet, for a bright idea had come into her head. a rabbit with a waistcoat - pocket, and a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit - hole under the hedge.
in another moment down went alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.
the rabbit - hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.
either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. first, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to...
(a) read the detail from paragraph 3.
... the rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket, and looked at it...
how does this detail help develop the plot of the story?
a it signals a turning point in the story because the pace of the action quickens.
b it reveals that the action in the story has reached its high point and will start to fall.
c it introduces a new character to the story that will be responsible for the conflict.
d it shows that the problems of the main character will be solved by going on a journey.
(b)
part b
which evidence from the passage best supports the answer to part a?
a there was nothing so very remarkable... (paragraph 3)
b ... burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it... (paragraph 3)
c the rabbit - hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way... (paragraph 5)
d ... too dark to see anything... (paragraph 6)
Part (a)
- Option A: The rabbit taking a watch and looking at it is unusual (a rabbit with a watch), which makes Alice curious and starts her pursuit, quickening the action. This signals a turning point as the story moves from Alice being bored to her engaging in the adventure.
- Option B: The action is just beginning, not at its high point.
- Option C: The rabbit is not the source of conflict but a catalyst for Alice's adventure.
- Option D: The detail is about the rabbit's action, not about solving Alice's problems via a journey yet.
- Option A: Talks about the rabbit being unremarkable initially, not supporting the turning point.
- Option B: "burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it" shows Alice is spurred into action (quickening pace) after the rabbit's watch action, supporting Part A's answer.
- Option C: Describes the rabbit hole, not related to the turning point from the rabbit's watch.
- Option D: Talks about darkness, not related to the turning point.
